South Zone sees 124 new COVID cases, among highest single-day total yet

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Thursday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,429 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 156,905. Of those, 12,187 cases are active while 142,713 people have recovered.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says 717 cases, or approximately half of today’s total, were variants.

“We have now reached the point that, if you test positive, you have the U.K variant.”

In the South Zone, 124 people tested positive, one of the largest single-day numbers the region has seen to date. 21 of these infections were variants.

67 people contracted the virus in Lethbridge as well as 14 in Medicine Hat, and 13 each in Lethbridge County and Cypress County.

Active infections in Lethbridge increased by 14 and regionally by 50.

Since yesterday’s update, three Albertans died from the virus with two in the Edmonton Zone and one from the Calgary Zone. To date, 2,005 people have died from COVID.

Provincially, 340 patients are currently hospitalized including 83 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 15,203 tests completed over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,804,181 tests conducted on 1,935,332 different people.

755,831 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of April 6.

  • Calgary Zone – 61,462 cases, 5,709 active
    • 133 in hospital, 39 in ICU
    • 610 deaths (one new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 59,121 cases, 2,916 active
    • 101 in hospital, 20 in ICU
    • 1,016 deaths (two new)
  • North Zone – 15,181 cases, 1,614 active
    • 36 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 150 deaths
  • Central Zone – 12,225 cases, 940 active
    • 32 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 123 deaths
  • South Zone – 8,700 cases, 915 active
    • 38 in hospital, 11 in ICU
    • 106 deaths

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 3,502 cases (67 new), 513 active, 30 deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,210 cases (16 new), 151 active, six deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,201 cases (29 new), 230 active, three deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,091 cases (22 new), 132 active, 21 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,369 cases, two active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 819 cases (three new), 51 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 763 cases (13 new), 114 active, eight deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 635 cases (14 new), 62 active, 17 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 423 cases, 56 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 252 cases (three new), nine active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 196 cases (nine new), 18 active, three deaths
  • Cypress County – 174 cases (13 new), 28 active, zero deaths
  • County of Newell – 164 cases (one new), two active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 163 cases, 40 active, four deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 133 cases (one new), eight active, three deaths
