Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region’s jobless rate at 9.5% last month

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region had one of the lower unemployment rates in Alberta last month.

In March, the economic region’s jobless rate was 9.5 per cent. Last month was the first time the rate for the region has been below 10 per cent since last November.

The rate for the whole province was 9.1 per cent. According to Statistics Canada, Alberta added 37,000 jobs in March.

Below is a list of the unemployment rate in each of Alberta’s economic regions for the month of March:

  • Edmonton: 11.3 per cent
  • Calgary: 10.4 per cent
  • Red Deer: 10.2 per cent
  • Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House-Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River: 10.0 per cent
  • Lethbridge-Medicine Hat: 9.5 per cent
  • Camrose-Drumheller: 9.1 per cent
  • Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake: 9.1 per cent

Canada-wide, the unemployment rate was 7.5 per cent, down from 8.2 per cent in February.

Statistics Canada said there were about 95,000 more retail jobs across the nation, as well as a jump of 21,000 jobs in the accommodation and food services sector.
