1,293 new COVID cases in Alberta, 68% were variants

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Saturday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,293 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 159,719. Of those, 13,687 cases are active while 144,020 people have recovered.

876 of today’s cases, or 68 per cent, were one of the various variants.

In the South Zone, 71 people tested positive with 28 coming from Lethbridge.

Active infections were flat in the city but rose by eight regionally.

Since yesterday’s update, five Albertans died from COVID with three in the Calgary Zone and one each in the South and Edmonton Zones. To date, 2,012 people have died as a result of the virus.

The death in the South Zone was for a resident of Cardston County.

Provincially, 349 patients are currently hospitalized including 84 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 14,371 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,834,199 tests completed on 1,944,430 different people.

818,689 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of April 8.

Since yesterday’s report, 876 variant cases were confirmed in the province with 34 coming from the South Zone.

Below is a breakdown of cases per regional health zone:

  • Calgary Zone – 62,724 cases, 6,361 active
    • 131 in hospital, 39 in ICU
    • 614 deaths (three new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 59,822 cases, 3,320 active
    • 111 in hospital, 20 in ICU
    • 1,018 deaths (one new)
  • North Zone – 15,559 cases, 1,815 active
    • 41 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 150 deaths
  • Central Zone – 12,521 cases, 1,124 active
    • 30 in hospital, eight in ICU
    • 123 deaths
  • South Zone – 8,860 cases, 955 active
    • 36 in hospital, 11 in ICU
    • 107 deaths (one new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 3,569 cases (28 new), 513 active, 30 deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,218 cases (three new), 127 active, six deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,245 cases (18 new), 247 active, three deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,106 cases (seven new), 139 active, 21 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,371 cases (two new), four active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 831 cases (four new), 50 active, 15 deaths (one new)
  • Lethbridge County – 779 cases (seven new), 120 active, eight deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 656 cases (six new), 81 active, 17 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 434 cases (seven new), 50 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 261 cases (two new), 18 active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 209 cases (five new), 30 active, three deaths
  • Cypress County – 173 cases (five new), 26 active, zero deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 165 cases, 36 active, four deaths
  • County of Newell – 167 cases (three new), five active, two deaths
