80% of Sunday’s 1,183 COVID cases in Alberta are variants

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Sunday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,183 cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 160,902. Of those, 14,293 cases are active while 144,596 people have recovered.

942 of today’s cases, or approximately 80 percent, were one of the various variants.

In the South Zone, 54 people tested positive including 21 in Lethbridge.

Active infections in the city fell by 15 and regionally by 13.

Since yesterday’s update, one person from the Edmonton Zone died from COVID, meaning the virus has now claimed the lives of 2,013 in Alberta.

Provincially, 376 patients are currently hospitalized including 90 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 14,861 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,849,108 tests completed on 1,949,223 different people.

847,630 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of April 9.

Since yesterday’s report, 942 cases of COVID-19 variants were confirmed with 62 of those coming from the South Zone.

Below is a breakdown of cases per regional health zone:

  • Calgary Zone – 63,244 cases, 6,600 active
    • 140 in hospital, 40 in ICU
    • 614 deaths
  • Edmonton Zone – 60,142 cases, 3,524 active
    • 120 in hospital, 25 in ICU
    • 1,019 deaths (one new)
  • North Zone – 15,701 cases, 1,885 active
    • 43 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 150 deaths
  • Central Zone – 12,660 cases, 1,222 active
    • 39 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 123 deaths
  • South Zone – 8,914 cases, 942 active
    • 34 in hospital, 11 in ICU
    • 107 deaths

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 3,590 cases (21 new), 498 active, 30 deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,222 cases (four new), 119 active, six deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,256 cases (11 new), 244 active, three deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,112 cases (six new), 135 active, 21 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,371 cases, four active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 836 cases (five new), 46 active, 15 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 786 cases (seven new), 117 active, eight deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 665 cases (nine new), 88 active, 17 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 440 cases (six new), 52 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 262 cases (one new), 18 active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 209 cases, 30 active, three deaths
  • Cypress County – 174 cases (one new), 25 active, zero deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 165 cases, 34 active, four deaths
  • County of Newell – 169 cases (two new), seven active, two deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 133 cases, seven active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 35 cases (one new), six active, zero deaths
