LETHBRIDGE, AB – For the second year in a row, the Val Matteotti Italian Open golf tournament will not take place due to COVID-19.

The Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation announced the decision on Tuesday morning.

The foundation said that as difficult as the decision was, the continued safety of the community continues to be its top priority.

Jason VandenHoek, executive director of the CRH Foundation, said, “While we miss gathering with our long-time sponsors and friends and spending the day together on the course, we’re cognizant of the continued threat that COVID-19 remains to Southern Alberta.”

“We look forward to continuing on with the Italian Open in the summer of 2022.”

To date, the golf tournament has brought in $1.6 million over the last 25 years. The foundation noted that funds raised have remained in the community to benefit the Chinook Regional Hospital.

In their statement, the foundation thanked the tournament organizing committee: Flora Matteotti, John Talerico, Tony Rose, Rocco Suriano, Jason VandenHoek, and Shonna Lamb.

The foundation will still be collecting funds in honour of the event, and anyone interested in donating can do so here.
