UPDATED: 57 new COVID cases in South Zone Wednesday, one death in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – CORRECTION: This article has been updated with corrected new case numbers for the South Health Zone.

Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Wednesday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,412 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 164,531. Of those, 15,569 cases are active while 146,933 people have recovered.

778 cases, or about 55 per cent of today’s total, were variants.

In the South Zone, 57 people tested positive with 23 in Lethbridge and 20 in Lethbridge County.

Active infections in the city dropped by 24 and regionally by 34.

LNN has reached out to AHS to get the latest updates on COVID-19 outbreaks throughout the South Zone.

Since yesterday’s update, eight Albertans died from COVID with four in the Edmonton Zone, three in the Central Zone, and one in the South Zone. To date, 2,029 people have died in Alberta as a result of the virus.

The death in the South Zone was for a man in his 60s from South Lethbridge. The case included comorbidities.

Provincially, 420 patients are currently hospitalized including 92 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 15,738 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,889,185 tests completed on 1,961,090 different people.

970,272 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of April 12.

Since yesterday’s report, 778 cases of COVID-19 variants have been confirmed across the province with 55 of those coming from the South Zone.

Below is a breakdown of cases per regional health zone:

  • Calgary Zone – 64,912 cases, 7,166 active
    • 169 in hospital, 42 in ICU
    • 616 deaths
  • Edmonton Zone – 61,147 cases, 3,960 active
    • 146 in hospital, 30 in ICU
    • 1,028 deaths (four new)
  • North Zone – 16,255 cases, 2,067 active
    • 33 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 150 deaths
  • Central Zone – 13,047 cases, 1,402 active
    • 39 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 127 deaths (three new)
  • South Zone – 9,085 cases, 915 active
    • 33 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 108 deaths (one new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 3,680 cases (23 new), 480 active, 31 deaths (one new)
    • North Lethbridge – 1,242 cases (three new), 114 active, six deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,308 cases (16 new), 242 active, three deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,130 cases (four new), 124 active, 22 deaths (one new)
  • Brooks – 1,372 cases, five active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 840 cases (one new), 40 active, 15 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 817 cases (20 new), 123 active, eight deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 681 cases (five new), 86 active, 17 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 444 cases (two new), 41 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 265 cases (one new), 19 active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 218 cases, 39 active, three deaths
  • Cypress County – 181 cases (one new), 28 active, zero deaths
  • County of Newell – 170 cases (one new), eight active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 168 cases (three new), 25 active, four deaths
