AHS reports two COVID deaths in South Zone, 90 cases

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Thursday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,646 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 166,177. Of those, 16,223 cases are active while 147,920 people have recovered.

1,020 cases, or about 62 per cent of today’s total, were variants. COVID-19 variants currently make up about 54 per cent of all active infections.

In the South Zone, 90 people tested positive including 46 in Lethbridge, 14 in Medicine Hat, and 12 in Lethbridge County.

Active cases in Lethbridge were relatively flat but rose by 15 regionally.

Since yesterday’s update, five Albertans died from COVID with two each in the South and Central Zones and one in the Edmonton Zone. To date, 2,034 Albertans have died as a result of the virus.

Of the deaths in the South Zone, one was for a woman in her 70s from North Lethbridge. Her death is linked to an outbreak at the Blue Sky Lodge.

The other is for a man in his 70s from Lethbridge County.

Provincially, 416 patients are currently hospitalized including 86 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 17,198 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,906,400 tests completed on 1,966,107 different people.

On the vaccine distribution front, Alberta has reached a new milestone with 1,004,123 doses administered as of the end of April 13.

Since yesterday’s report, 1,020 cases of COVID-19 variants have been confirmed in the province with 31 of those coming from the South Zone.

Below is a breakdown of cases per regional health zone:

  • Calgary Zone – 65,560 cases, 7,329 active
    • 166 in hospital, 39 in ICU
    • 616 deaths
  • Edmonton Zone – 61,595 cases, 4,201 active
    • 147 in hospital, 29 in ICU
    • 1,029 deaths (one new)
  • North Zone – 16,513 cases, 2,174 active
    • 33 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 150 deaths
  • Central Zone – 13,236 cases, 1,515 active
    • 37 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 129 deaths (two new)
  • South Zone – 9,174 cases, 930 active
    • 33 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 110 deaths (two new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 3,726 cases (46 new), 482 active, 32 deaths (one new)
    • North Lethbridge – 1,252 cases (10 new), 111 active, seven deaths (one new)
    • West Lethbridge – 1,337 cases (25 new), 250 active, three deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,137 cases (seven new), 121 active, 22 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,373 cases (one new), six active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 841 cases (one new), 37 active, 15 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 829 cases (12 new), 128 active, nine deaths (one new)
  • Medicine Hat – 695 cases (14 new), 96 active, 17 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 446 cases (two new), 38 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 265 cases, 18 active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 222 cases (four new), 41 active, three deaths
  • Cypress County – 183 cases (two new), 28 active, zero deaths
  • County of Newell – 172 cases (two new), 10 active, two deaths
