LETHBRIDGE, AB – Traffic flows will be impacted on 6 Avenue South and 9 Avenue North in Lethbridge this year.

The City of Lethbridge is undertaking two major watermain renewal projects. The 6 Avenue South initiative starts Thursday, April 15 and is expected to be finished by June 12, weather permitting.

6 Avenue South will be partially closed with traffic restricted to the north half of the road. South access to 6 Avenue South will not be available at 5, 6 and 7 Streets.

In a release, the City stated that, “given the importance of 6 Avenue South as an arterial roadway, it was decided to replace the pipe from 5 Street to beyond the 7 Street intersection to reduce the risk of future water main failures and unscheduled repairs in this area.”

Some parking restrictions will be in place, and some residents and businesses may need to be hooked up to a temporary water supply. Those that are impacted will have already received notice from the City of Lethbridge.

The 9 Avenue North portion of the project will start in early July. It’s expected to be completed by the middle of August to reduce the impact on nearby Wilson Middle School. 9 Avenue North will be fully closed at the worksite location near 20 Street North for some phases of the project.

The City says its been replacing cast iron water mains for over 40 years. As of this year, cast iron pipes represent 10 per cent of the total water mains in the city and nearly 100 per cent of the water main breaks.

Divers are reminded to expect delays and drive with caution, following all posted signage.
