City seeking Indigenous artist for commemoration project

Apr 16, 2021 | 9:32 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge has put out a call for Indigenous artists.

The city is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from Indigenous artists for a community engagement process in support of two commemoration initiatives on Residential School Survivors, as well as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ Peoples.

The successful artist will engage with the community on both initiatives and present recommendations on how they should be undertaken.

The city noted that engaging on both projects at the same time ensures that opportunities are available for the conversations to be connected geographically, narratively and artistically.

The desires outcome of the Indigenous Commemoration Project is to honour victims, survivors and their families. The successful artist will try to get a deeper understanding of the community’s expectations for commemoration while boosting the public visibility and representation of Blackfoot and the other Indigenous peoples who call Lethbridge home.

This project is a partnership between the Reconciliation Lethbridge Advisory Committee, Public Art Program and Indigenous Relations Office.

The deadline for artist submissions is May 14, 2021. More details on eligibility, timelines and budget can be found here.

Additional questions can be directed to the city’s Indigenous Relations Office at perry.stein@lethbridge.ca.
