Property Tax penalties delayed for second year in a row

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — City Council has approved another extension of property tax payments.

Similar to last year, residents unable to make payments by June 30, 2021 will have an additional 92 days before penalties are applied.

Property Tax notices will be sent out at the end of the May but citizens who are struggling financially due to COVID-19 will have until October 1, 2021

Mayor Chris Spearmen commented on the need for the delay.

“It is really important to give people who are suffering financially, one less thing to worry about and give them a bit of a break and a bit of a delay.”

As in 2020, the new penalties on outstanding balances will be a three per cent increase on October 1, four per cent on November 1, and five per cent on December 1. Penalties are only applied on the unpaid portion of the tax bill so paying what you can before October 1 will alleviate extra costs later in the year.

Spearmen went on to say “The vast majority of people were able to pay their bills on time last year and many paid before June 30. But I know there were those who really appreciated the opportunity to have the extra three months to get the payment made without penalty.”

Larry Laverty, Tax and Assessment General Manager says the extension will also give the Tax and Assessment team more time to work with businesses and residents on payment options.

“We recognize the ongoing pandemic continues to have a significant financial impact on many residents. If you find yourself in a situation where you don’t know how you are going to pay your taxes, please contact us to talk about what payment options are available. We’re here to help.”

Property owners that are able to pay by June 30 are being asked to do so.
