1,857 new COVID-19 cases in Alberta Thursday

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Thursday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,857 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 177,087. Of those, 19,182 cases are active while 155,851 people have recovered.

1,326 cases, or about 71 per cent of today’s total, were variants.

Due to a technical issue with AHS’s reporting system Wednesday, data including the regional and local breakdowns were not provided. Today’s report includes some of yesterday’s numbers as well.

In the South Zone, 174 people tested positive including 57 in Lethbridge over the last 48 hours.

Since Tuesday’s update, six Albertans died from COVID with two each in the South, Calgary, and Edmonton Zones. The virus has now claimed the lives of 2,054 people.

One of the deaths in the South Zone was for a woman in her 90’s from South Lethbridge. Her death is linked to an outbreak at Martha’s House.

The other is for a man in his 70’s from Fort Macleod.

Provincially, 518 patients are currently hospitalized including 116 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 17,524 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 4,016,838 tests completed on 1,997,738 different people.

1,275,287 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of April 21.

Since Tuesday’s report, 2,658 cases of COVID-19 variants have been identified in Alberta, making up 75 per cent of the total for the last two days combined. This includes 136 variant cases in the South Zone.

  • Calgary Zone – 70,323 cases, 8,380 active
    • 203 in hospital, 54 in ICU
    • 621 deaths (two new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 64,509 cases, 5,102 active
    • 179 in hospital, 39 in ICU
    • 1,037 deaths (two new)
  • North Zone – 18,105 cases, 2,708 active
    • 47 in hospital, nine in ICU
    • 152 deaths
  • Central Zone – 14,408 cases, 1,994 active
    • 56 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 130 deaths
  • South Zone – 9,697 cases, 970 active
    • 33 in hospital, nine in ICU
    • 114 deaths (two new)

  • Lethbridge – 3,956 cases (57 new), 449 active, 35 deaths (one new)
    • West Lethbridge – 1,419 cases, 211 active, three deaths

    • South Lethbridge – 1,199 cases, 106 active, 24 deaths (one new)
  • Brooks – 1,383 cases (six new), 16 active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 860 cases (seven new), 38 active, 15 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 895 cases (25 new), 129 active, nine deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 764 cases (33 new), 122 active, 17 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 472 cases (four new), 50 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 266 cases (one new), nine active, five deaths
