96% of Friday’s COVID cases in South Zone were variants

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Friday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,690 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 178,777. Of those, 19,446 cases are active while 157,272 people have recovered.

1,184 cases, or about 70 per cent of today’s total, are variants.

In the South Zone, 74 people tested positive. 71 of those infections were one of the various variants.

Lethbridge saw 23 new cases, 16 in Medicine Hat, and 11 in the County of Warner.

Active infections Lethbridge fell by 15 but increased by 16 regionally.

Since yesterday’s update, five Albertans died from COVID with three in the Calgary Zone and one each in the Central and Edmonton Zones. To date, 2,059 Albertans have died from the virus.

Provincially, 549 patients are currently hospitalized including 125 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 17,562 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 4,034,404 tests competed on 2,002,620 different people.

1,319,837 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered as of the end of April 22.

Since yesterday’s report, 1,184 COVID-19 variant cases were confirmed in Alberta with 71 of those coming from the South Zone.

Below is a breakdown of COVID-19 cases over the past 48 hours:

  • Calgary Zone – 71,014 cases, 8,397 active
    • 220 in hospital, 59 in ICU
    • 624 deaths (three new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 65,050 cases, 5,307 active
    • 192 in hospital, 45 in ICU
    • 1,038 deaths (one new)
  • North Zone – 18,312 cases, 2,714 active
    • 48 in hospital, eight in ICU
    • 152 deaths
  • Central Zone – 14,574 cases, 2,035 active
    • 53 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 131 deaths (one new)
  • South Zone – 9,771 cases, 954 active
    • 36 in hospital, eight in ICU
    • 114 deaths

  • Lethbridge – 3,979 cases (23 new), 434 active, 35 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,430 cases, 197 active, three deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,342 cases, 131 active, eight deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,208 cases, 107 active, 24 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,387 cases (four new), 20 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 901 cases (six new), 126 active, nine deaths
  • Cardston County – 863 cases (three new), 31 active, 15 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 780 cases (16 new), 128 active, 17 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 475 cases (three new), 46 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 267 cases (one new), nine active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 263 cases (11 new), 53 active, three deaths
