First Responders in Lethbridge donate bikes to children in need

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — It started as a simple post on Facebook, asking for bike donations for youth in Lethbridge, and it didnt take long for people to jump on board, excited to help out.

Over 30 bikes will be distributed across Lethbridge to children who don’t have the opportunity to ride.

Mallory Kristjanson, with Connecting our Community Lethbridge, reached out to a number of first responders asking for bike donations for youth within the city.

“What started out as three donated bikes, ended up for a total of 35 and still counting. We have other first responders and community members still bringing their bikes forward.”

Groups such as the Lethbridge Police Service, The Watch, The Public Safety Communications Centre (911-dispatch), and the Lethbridge Fire Fighters Charities Association have all teamed up to purchase bicycles with their own funds to help support this important initiative. Other community members have been participating as well from local business owners to law firms.

Tarrah Trotter, a Public Safety Communication’s Officer, says as soon as her unit got word, within minutes co-workers were sending E-Transfers which helped purchase three bikes.

“Lethbridge 911 works hand-in-hand with Fire and Police. So, it was really good to hear that as a team not only do we get to work together on a daily basis, but when good community things come about we’re there too.”

Sergeant Steve Veale was excited about the donations and hopes this inspires others in the community to help out.

“We’ll do whatever we can to help the community out – you know anything we can do to help kids and even take stress off of parents.”

So far Kristjanson has been in contact with eight different families who are over the moon with the contribution from first responders, as they would not have been able to provide these opportunities for their children.

“We just wanted to make sure we could create a little bit more magic in the community and continue to spark positivity though these times” – Mallory Kristjanson

The Green and Yellow group of Lethbridge will continue the collection of bikes in town. If you’re looking to make a donation, you can visit their Facebook page.
