Bow Island Fire Department battles weekend grass fire

WINNIFRED, AB – Large plumes of smoke could be seen as the Bow Island Fire Department responded to a large grass fire north of Winnifred Saturday.

Deputy Fire Chief Bill Veilleux said crews were called to the scene at approximately 11:30 a.m. The Burdett Fire Service was also called out to assist.

According to Veilleux, the fire was burning on native grazing land and in the coulees. Manure located on the land caused parts of the fire to rekindle after gusts of wind.

According to their Facebook page, the blaze burned approximately 200 to 300 acres of grassland.

The property owner and neighbors in the area pitched in to supply water, tractors, and disks to help create a fireguard

No one was injured.

Veillleux said the lack of moisture so far this year has made the land in the area particularly susceptible to fire.

“ The grass hasn’t started growing yet, plus with the lack of snow this winter and the coolness not allowing the grass to grow, it is definitely tinder dry at the moment,” Veilleax said.

The fire is fully extinguished.

The cause is still under investigation.
