Long-term care homes in Alberta finally seeing easing COVID-19 restrictions

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Starting May 10th, the Government of Alberta is starting to ease restrictions on continuing care facilities.

These changes will increase the number of designated family or friends from two to four who can visit residents.

It will also allow for outdoor social events and limited indoor gatherings.

This comes after individuals living in long-term care have seen a drastic decrease in COVID-19 cases since its peak of 831 active infections on December 27th.

Hospitalizations have decreased by a whopping 93 per cent and fatalities from COVID-19 have declined by 94 per cent.

Premier Jason Kenny says that these facilities have been uniquely vulnerable to the virus, and he wants to recognize the resilience of residents and staff.

“Long-term care residents need joy, hope, and connection just like everyone else. They have shouldered the burden of this pandemic and sacrificed important time with their loved ones and I’m glad that we are able to ease these restrictions, but we will continue to move cautiously, as evidence is still emerging on vaccines and their ability to both protect residents from variants and limit transmitting the virus to others.”

The easing of restrictions are not mandatory and will be left up to the discretion of residents and staff at each location.

The visitation policy will allow for up to four visitors from the same household per resident, outdoor social visits can expand to 10 people, and residents can allow for four designated family supports if the resident is approaching end of life.

Each site will develop its own visitor’s approach that falls within the guidelines set out in the order and will reflect the risk tolerance of residents living at the site.

Masks and social distancing still remain in place.
