Apr 27, 2021 | 4:06 PM

EDMONTON, AB– Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Tuesday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,539 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 184,840. Of those, 20,721 cases are active while 162,052 people have recovered.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says this is the second-highest active caseload throughout the entire pandemic behind only a brief period in mid-December.

In the South Zone, 77 people tested positive with 29 in Lethbridge, 19 in Medicine Hat, and 10 in Lethbridge County.

Active infections remained relatively flat locally and regionally.

Since yesterday’s update, seven Albertans died from COVID including three in the Edmonton Zone, two in the Calgary Zone, and one each in the South and North Zone.

The death in the South Zone was for a woman in her 80’s from Lethbridge County. This is the second time this week that AHS is reporting a COVID death in Lethbridge County.

Dr. Hinshaw says there has been further analysis of COVID-19 deaths in the province. It turns out that 14 deaths that had previously been declared as a result of COVID did not actually include the virus.

As a result, the more accurate number, including today’s deaths, is 2,067.

Provincially, 635 patients are currently hospitalized including 143 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 13,743 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 4,097,963 tests completed on 2,020,567 different people.

1,468,785 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered as of the end of April 26.
