Lethbridge Food Banks gearing up for Target Hunger Food Drive

LETHBRIDGE, AB– The Interfaith and the Lethbridge Food Bank have been teaming up for the past seven years for the Target Hunger food drive.

The iconic yellow bags will be distributed across the city, in hopes that people will fill them with non-perishable food items.

The food drive is taking place on Saturday, June 12th, and will be needing a multitude of volunteers to help reach this year’s goal of 50,000 pounds of food. Which although sounds like a lot, will help get the food bank’s through two weeks of emergency food assistance to the community.

Danielle McIntyre, the Executive Director with Interfaith Food Bank says she’s excited to see the community come together and help out their neighbours in need.

“We need a ton of help. There are a lot of volunteer positions available specifically with taking a route and delivering the bags and picking up the donations on the Saturday. We also need help from people to help us sort and accept that food when it comes in.”

Volunteer applications open May 1st, (https://targethungerlethbridge.com/volunteer-info-2/) and will be open until June 12th, driving routes are first come first serve, so it’s important to sign up early in order to get your desired route.

McIntyre says that “The community support is growing every year, it’s fantastic to see how much faster we’re able to fill the routes every year, and how many volunteers are stepping up to help us out. Community members are starting to become accustomed for looking for that yellow bag and they know what to do with it when it shows up. It’s a great community engagement.”

All the food that comes in from Target Hunger will be distributed equally between the Interfaith and Lethbridge Food Bank.

If you’re unable to donate time or food, you can also make a financial donation to help out these organizations.
