Lethbridge marks National Day of Mourning

Apr 28, 2021 | 8:27 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge will have its flags at half-mast today.

April 28 marks the Day of Mourning across Canada and the world. It’s a time to remember workers who have been killed, injured or disabled on the job.

In 2020, 150 Albertans were lost to workplace injury or illness.

Although there will not be a public ceremony this year due to COVID-19, residents in Lethbridge are invited to join city officials in honouring the lives of workers lost.

The National Day of Mourning was officially recognized by the Canadian government in 1991, eight years after the day of remembrance was launched by the Canadian Labour Congress.

The Day of Mourning has since spread to around 80 countries across the world.
