LETHBRIDGE, AB – Firefighters deal with enough risks as it is, but starting today, they will have one less thing to worry about – catching COVID-19.

They are one of several groups who became eligible for vaccinations starting on Friday, April 30 following Thursday’s announcement by the Government of Alberta.

In a statement from the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association, they thanked provincial officials for understanding the importance of firefighters as first responders.

“This move is seen as a critical acknowledgement by the Government, of the importance of the Fire Service, whether delivered by volunteer or career firefighters. Many communities see fire trucks and crews responding to medical emergencies on a daily basis.”

“As with other first responders, the vaccinations will protect the firefighters, the crews that currently must self-isolate potentially leaving the communities with less protection, and the citizens that they come into daily contact with.”

The new vaccination announcement means that over 65,000 additional Albertans in Phases 2C and 2D became eligible.

This also includes front line police and sheriffs, border officials, staff and residents of care facilities that were not already eligible, and more members of the general population.

As of the end of April 28, 1,528,569 doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been administered in Alberta. 292,765 people in the province have received the recommended two doses.
