86 new COVID cases in South Zone Friday

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Friday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,980 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 205,115. Of those, 24,850 cases are active while 178,149 people have recovered.

479 cases, or about 24 per cent of today’s total, were variants.

In the South Zone, 86 people tested positive with 26 in Lethbridge and 14 in Medicine Hat.

Active infections in Lethbridge rose by nine and by 13 regionally.

Since yesterday’s update, four Albertans died from COVID with two in the Edmonton Zone and one each in the Central and North Zones. To date, 2,106 Albertans have lost their lives due to COVID-19.

Provincially, 659 patients are currently hospitalized including 150 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 18,936 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 4,282,841 tests completed on 2,075,133 different people.

1,792,213 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered as of the end of May 6.

Since yesterday’s report, 479 cases of COVID-19 variants were confirmed in Alberta with 52 of those coming from the South Zone.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone:

  • Calgary Zone – 82,368 cases, 10,859 active
    • 237 in hospital, 59 in ICU
    • 641 deaths (two new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 71,418 cases, 5,969 active
    • 232 in hospital, 57 in ICU
    • 1,045 deaths
  • North Zone – 22,448 cases, 3,772 active
    • 95 in hospital, 17 in ICU
    • 162 deaths (one new)
  • Central Zone – 17,705 cases, 2,901 active
    • 58 in hospital, 10 in ICU
    • 138 deaths (one new)
  • South Zone – 11,135 cases, 1,335 active
    • 37 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 120 deaths

  • Lethbridge – 4,449 cases (26 new), 460 active, 36 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,608 cases (eight new), 173 active, three deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,501 cases (13 new), 156 active, nine deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,339 cases (five new), 129 active, 24 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,428 cases (four new), 46 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,095 cases (nine new), 178 active, 12 deaths
  • Cardston County – 932 cases (six new), 64 active, 16 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 1,013 cases (14 new), 226 active, 18 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 533 cases (three new), 58 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 390 cases (eight new), 126 active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 283 cases, 19 active, five deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 279 cases (nine new), 84 active, five deaths
  • Cypress County – 238 cases (two new), 27 active, zero deaths
