Province looking to improve K-12 student transportation

May 10, 2021 | 2:35 PM

EDMONTON, AB– Lethbridge-East MLA Nathan Neudorf is leading a team to improve K-12 student transportation in Alberta.

Officials say the first phase of this K-12 student transportation action plan begins immediately. A review of student transportation operations of up to 15 school divisions will also be done in phase one.

“We have a good transportation system that moves students safely to and from school every day, but we know it can be even safer and more cost-effective. Based on the valuable work of the Student Transportation Task Force, we have a plan to move us forward to make improvements and strengthen the system. This work starts right now,” says Minister of Education, Adriana LaGrange.

The second phase will begin by September and includes work to enhance regional cooperation among school divisions.

This phase also examines a provincial purchasing program for buses, fuel, insurance, and parts.

In phase three, Alberta’s government will complete a new student transportation-funding model to be used during the 2022-23 or 2023-24 school year.

“I was incredibly honoured to be the chair of this task force. I hope that the recommendations we have put forward will provide foundational change across Alberta’s student transportation system for years to come,” Nathan Neudorf, MLA for Lethbridge-East, chair of student transportation task force.

The task force provided its recommendations to the government in late 2020 in a report to the Minister of Education.
