U of L launches contest giving vaccinated students chance to win fall tuition

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Lethbridge is launching what it calls the “most important contest” in the institution’s history.

Through the It’s Worth A Shot! contest, registered students who get a COVID-19 vaccine before 11:59 p.m. MDT on September 8, 2021 are eligible to win one of nine grand prizes.

The grand prizes include full tuition, student administrative fees, fine arts access fee and sport and recreation services fee for the Fall 2021 term (tuition and fees value will be equivalent to the domestic rate for each student).

Seven prizes will be given to undergraduate students at the Lethbridge campus, one to a graduate student and one to a student at the university’s Calgary campus.

Other prizes include three $500 gift cards for the U of L bookstore, 20 $20 Bridgbebucks prizes and 100 pairs of University of Lethbridge-branded socks.

President and vice-chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon said, “this is an investment we are making in ensuring our campus is as safe as it possibly can be.”

“We know many in our community have been, or are planning to be, vaccinated, while others may need some encouragement to be vaccinated as soon as they are able. Our responsibility is to create a safe campus and contribute to the health of the Lethbridge and Calgary communities, and we anticipate this campaign will have a significant impact.”

The U of L is also planning a contest for its faculty and staff members. More details on that initiative are expected to be shared with the school’s internal community in the coming weeks.

Last Thursday, May 6, the province expanded vaccine eligibility to all Albertans aged 30 years old and older. Effective Monday, May 10, all Albertans aged 12 and up can book their vaccine appointments.

Associate vice-present (students) at the U of L, Kathleen Massey says expanded eligibility means the vast majority of the university community is now eligible for vaccination.

Massey remarked that, “this is a tremendous opportunity for our faculty, staff and students to protect themselves and others.”

“Through this contest, and through other information campaigns, we will continue to encourage our community members to get vaccinated as soon as they are able.”

The draw for the It’s Worth A Shot! contest will take place on September 10, 2021.

To collect their prize, winning students will have to be registered after the extended drop date in Fall 2021 and show a proof of receiving at least one COVID-19 vaccination prior to September 8, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.

Only students who have their names drawn will be asked for proof of vaccination.

More details about the contest, including an entry form, are available here.
