City addresses concerns with new disc golf course in the coulees

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The idea of discs being hurled through an area of Lethbridge’s coulees is not flying so well with some members of the public.

The city has put up signs in Peenaquim Park, advising of the future home of the Lethbridge West Lions Club Disc Golf Course.

Parks Manager Dave Ellis says it will be located between softball alley and the off-leash dog park.

Currently, the only course for disc golf in Lethbridge is in Nicholas Sheran Park.

“With the increase in the sport’s popularity and different people picking it up, it’s sometimes a little crowded and people are lining to play, so the club that represents the sport in the city has asked for a new location so they can hold bigger tournaments and accommodate more people.”

Ellis is aware of some of the concerns residents have with the new location but says the city is already addressing some of them.

“There was some misconceptions about what was involved with this. Some of them felt like we were going to close down the off-leash park and displace the dog owners, but that was not the case at all.”

Parking was a major issue for certain members of the public as parking in the area is already limited, however, Ellis assures that a new parking lot will be constructed for this amenity.

Another has to do with washrooms. While the disc golf course will not have washrooms, it is something the parks in this area already lack.

For larger tournaments, he says organizers can always bring in porta-potties if needed.

The one area that Ellis admits could be troubling has to do with our four-legged friends and what types of fun they like to have.

“Dogs like to chase things that are thrown, so that is a potential conflict, but like I say, most all of our parks are shared-use and people have learned to get along and kind of work together. There’s some space between the two activities – not probably as much as ideal, but there is a separation.”

In the coming weeks, the city will be reaching out to more residents to gain their thoughts on the disc golf course and address and further issues that come up.

Given the type of amenity that this is, there is not a lot of work that needs to be done to get it ready. Construction will mostly consist of building the parking lot and putting up the necessary baskets and signage.

Work is set to start in June with the course opening later in the summer.
