LETHBRIDGE, AB – Update: The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has provided a brief statement.

A member of the Lethbridge Police Service is under investigation.

According to LPS, information was received regarding the “potential mishandling of possible evidence by an LPS officer.”

ASIRT adds that this includes “several items” which may have been exhibits in a particular investigation.

Lethbridge Police has ordered an internal professional misconduct investigation under the Police Act and Police Service Regulation, which will be held in abeyance until ASIRT’s investigation is complete.

“ASIRT’s investigation will examine the manner in which the potential exhibits were managed during the incident, and seek to determine whether the actions in question were lawful. The original investigation will proceed independently from ASIRT,” reads a statement from ASIRT.

The officer has been suspended with pay.

LPS and ASIRT say they will be unable to provide any additional comments at this time.
