1,433 new COVID cases in Alberta, 78 in South Zone

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Friday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,433 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 216,626. Of those, 23,873 cases are active while 190,616 people have recovered.

399 cases, or about 28 per cent of today’s total, were variants.

In the South Zone, 78 people tested positive with 19 of those coming from Lethbridge, 18 in Medicine Hat, and 15 in Lethbridge County.

Active infections in Lethbridge fell by 23 and regionally by 39.

Since yesterday’s update, five Albertans died from COVID with two each in the Central and Edmonton Zones and one in the Calgary Zone. To date, 2,137 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 713 patients are currently hospitalized including 177 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 15,029 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 4,391,097 tests completed on 2,107,501 different people.

2,086,589 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the province as of the end of May 13.

Since yesterday’s report, 399 cases of COVID-19 variants were confirmed across Alberta with 47 of those being from the South Zone.

  • Calgary Zone – 87,983 cases, 11,367 active
    • 263 in hospital, 63 in ICU
    • 646 deaths (one new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 73,935 cases, 5,278 active
    • 246 in hospital, 75 in ICU
    • 1,056 deaths (two new)
  • North Zone – 24,117 cases, 3,496 active
    • 97 in hospital, 17 in ICU
    • 165 deaths
  • Central Zone – 18,875 cases, 2,500 active
    • 68 in hospital, 10 in ICU
    • 147 deaths (two new)
  • South Zone – 11,683 cases, 1,216 active
    • 39 in hospital, 12 in ICU
    • 123 deaths

  • Lethbridge – 4,625 cases (19 new), 394 active, 37 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,676 cases (nine new), 158 active, three deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,565 cases (four new), 141 active, 10 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,383 cases (six new), 93 active, 24 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,448 cases (five new), 38 active, 15 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,184 cases (15 new), 187 active, 11 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 1,120 cases (18 new), 209 active, 18 deaths
  • Cardston County – 977 cases (four new), 74 active, 17 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 548 cases (two new), 58 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 416 cases (three new), 93 active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 288 cases, 15 active, five deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 297 cases (one new), 68 active, five deaths
  • Cypress County – 258 cases (four new), 29 active, zero deaths
