Lethbridge seeing “abnormally dry” weather, high temperatures before May long weekend

May 14, 2021 | 12:02 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB– Meteorologist Janelle Gergely with Environment Canada says Lethbridge and parts of Southern Alberta will see temperatures substantially rise over the next week.

“We’ve seen this slow climb up in temperatures, looks pretty beautiful right now and what that is, is warm air pushing in off the Pacific.”

Gergely says any cold-weather systems that seem to be developing over Alberta are affecting Northern Alberta.

“Luckily they’re missing central and they’re missing the south, which really just leaves sunny skies for most of the weekend.”

This upcoming weekend in Lethbridge, May 15, 16 will see temperatures rise to 28 degrees celsius.

Monday, May 17, and Tuesday, May 18, will see temperatures jump up to 29 and 26.

Gergely says a sharp rise in temperatures across the region is great, but the fact that it’s been quite dry can be dangerous.

“Based on our maps, Lethbridge is still considered to be abnormally dry but if you are going to be out camping this weekend or hiking just be cautious and know that conditions are abnormally dry.”

Though the temperature is projected to reach near 30 degrees celsius, Gergely says it’s a little “optimistic.”

Lethbridge and some parts of central Alberta have had very little to no spring precipitation and are below normal precipitation accumulations.
