WATERTON, AB – Canada’s national parks are gearing up to welcome visitors for the May long weekend.

Parks Canada says the visitor season will officially begin with most tourist amenities and businesses opening up for the season.

Ron Hallman, President and CEO of Parks Canada, says the health and wellbeing of all visitors and employees are of the utmost importance.

“The Parks Canada team is working extremely hard to provide a safe, clean, and healthy experience and everyone can play an important role. Visitors should make every effort to plan ahead, respect travel restrictions, follow the guidance of public health experts, make safe choices, and leave no trace when visiting outdoor spaces. By working together, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable 2021 visitor season for all.”

In Waterton, the town’s website says most businesses plan to be open for May long.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be health and safety measures in effect again this year including reduced capacity and adjusting capacity and visitor flow in spaces like visitor centres, historic buildings, and washrooms.

A few tips Parks Canada has for visitors include:

  • Plan ahead for what locations are open
  • Following COVID-19 travel restrictions
  • Make safe choices in terms of the activities you take part in
  • Be self-sufficient by bringing a kit with extra hygiene supplies
  • Leave no trace by cleaning up after yourself
  • Respect wildlife

Canada has 171 national historic sites, 47 national parks, five national marine conservation areas, and one national urban park.
