Census-takers to soon start follow-ups with Canadian households

OTTAWA, ON – If you didn’t complete your 2021 Census yet, you might get a knock on your door.

Statistics Canada enumerators will start follow-ups with dwellings from which completed questionnaires have not yet been received later this month. Before census-takers arrive at your doorstep, though, they will first try to reach households by phone as to avoid in-person contact when possible.

Those who will visit residences across the country will adhere to a strict no-contact protocol. Under the protocol, no interviews will be conducted inside the respondent’s home and no census employee from Statistics Canada is permitted to visit or enter institutional collective dwellings, especially the dwellings housing residents who most vulnerable to COVID-19, like seniors’ homes.

Interviews will be done outdoors and physically distanced. Census employees will be required to wear masks and hand sanitizer will be provided to employees in order for them to frequently disinfect their hands.

In the meantime, the 2021 Census can still be completed contact-free online, on paper or over the phone. Households can contact the Census Help Line at 1-855-340-2021 to receive their secure access code (which was included on mailed-in notices) to complete their questionnaire online or can call 1-877-885-2021 to request a paper copy of the census.
