COVID vaccine rollout to expand to another 60 Albertan physician clinics

LETHBRIDGE, AB – In the coming weeks, more physicians across the province will be able to administer COVID-19 vaccines.

While the participating clinics have not yet been announced, Health Minister Tyler Shandro says another 60 clinics will join the 20 that are already giving out shots.

“We are excited to soon expand the rollout to include additional community physicians across the province. We will work together to vaccinate more Albertans and protect their patients. We know that physicians are a trusted healthcare provider and this will help reach many people who are eagerly waiting for their chance to get the vaccine.”

Since the spring, Alberta Health, the Alberta Medical Association, and the Primary Care Network have been working together to incorporate community physicians into the provincial vaccine rollout.

Each participating clinic will contact their patients who are eligible for immunization. About 8,200 doses of Moderna’s vaccine will be offered.

After the 60 new clinics join the program, the province will look to expand it even further.

“I appreciate all the hard work that has gone into getting the vaccine into community clinics,” says Dr. Paul Boucher, President of the Alberta Medical Association. “Our community physicians are a trusted source of information and are uniquely positioned to help patients understand the benefits of vaccination. I am confident that their expertise will help reach patients that might not otherwise seek to be vaccinated and will add significant capacity to the vaccination effort.”

To date, more than 2.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to over 2.2 million Albertans.
