LETHBRIDGE, AB– In the week of Capital Improvement Program (CIP) funding deliberations, the committee voted in favour to recommend that council approves the program.

In Tuesday’s city council meeting, the CIP recommendations were approved including the Waste & Recycling Curbside Organics Collection program.

The program is set to be implemented in 2023 as the last step in the city’s waste diversion strategy.

Now, over the next year, the program will be finalized and worked out with more public engagement.

For a single-family residence in the city, the green bin will have a fee of five dollars per month and for a multi-family residence, it will be four dollars per month.

Similar to the organics collection program in Peel, Ontario, the following items can normally go into an organics bin:

  • Cooked and raw foods – dairy, fruit, vegetables, bread.
  • Napkins, paper plates, paper food wrapping, and paper bags.
  • Grass cuttings, clippings, twigs, weeds.
  • Peelings and unwanted leftovers.
  • Teabags, tea leaves, coffee grinds, and coffee filters.

The final items that can go into the bin may vary as the project is still in development.

Households will be able to select what size they want their bin to be with three separate options.

Before the program kicks off in 2023, Waste and Recycling Utility General Manager Joel Sanchez says the city will want to educate residents on the program and provide information about ticketing for the bins.

“Staff will do a visual inspection checking into the materials that are in are within the program and if residents are not compliant we’ll just leave a tag that says [that] you had this material [that does not go in] and if there is a reoccurrence the carts will be tipped back and won’t be collected.”
