LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Lethbridge (U of L) is celebrating Pride Month, beginning with the raising of a pride flag on Monday, June 7.

Associate Vice President of Students Kathleen Massey says the flag is a visual reminder of the university’s commitment to fostering an atmosphere that is welcoming and supportive of diversity.

“This was really a student-driven initiative and something our students felt was needed not only as a valuable resource for the 2SLGBTQ+ community but for our campus community as a whole.”

The U of L has also created a new website with resources for 2SLGBTQ+ persons.Kathryn DeLucia, a fourth-year women and gender studies student, who also helped to develop the site, says it brings together policies, procedures, and support services the U of L had already been offering.

As well, it introduces new information such as how to execute a legal name change or preferred name change at the school, guidelines for the use of pronouns, and links to various research projects about gender and sexuality.

“The webpage was developed to create accessible 2SLGBTQ+ resources on campus and was driven by the need for greater visibility and inclusion,” says DeLucia. “It is vital the U of L continues this work to affirm we are a campus that values queer and trans students and their experiences.”

Before soft-launching the site in late 2020, Massey says they consulted a number of groups on campus including students, researchers, and colleagues at other universities.
