David and Collet Stephan expected to book third trial in late June
LETHBRIDGE, AB – It will likely take another couple of weeks before we know when the third trial for a Southern Alberta couple will happen.
David and Collet Stephan were initially charged with one count each of failing to provide the necessaries of life after their 19-month-old son Ezekiel died of meningitis back in 2012.
A jury convicted the couple in 2016, but the Supreme Court of Canada overturned that verdict and ordered a second trial at which a judge acquitted them.
The Appeal Court judges ruled that comments made by the judge about a chief medical examiner at the second trial demonstrated “a reasonable apprehension of bias.”
