Local teammates commit to Lethbridge College’s men’s soccer team

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks have added two local players to the men’s soccer team.

Charlie Block and Vincent Dyck, both products of the Lethbridge Football Club (LFC) have committed to the team for next season. Both athletes are set to graduate from Chinook High School this summer.

On the field, they both play centre midfield and both were most recently teammates with the Vancouver Whitecaps ‘Caps 2 College (C2C) Academy in Lethbridge, a development program led by head coach Sam Heap.

Kodiaks head coach Sean Carey is hopeful that Charlie Block will become a solid understudy to Ben Knight, who was named the 2019 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) men’s soccer player of the year.

Carey said of Block that, “he’s got a lot of vision.”

“He’s a big game player, so I think that having him alongside Ben Knight and having Ben kind of coax him along will get him to that next level. I think Ben will be fantastic for him in the middle of the park, talking to him and developing him as a player.”

Block said he’s excited to play for his hometown team and is hoping for a chance to compete for a national title. He stated that, “it’s obviously nice they made it to nationals [in 2019]. That’s a pretty big achievement.”

“I’ve also heard the bus rides are pretty crazy. We just had a Zoom meeting with the team the other night and a lot of the players were actually talking about how fun the bus rides are, so I’m definitely looking forward to that.”

Academically, Block has already selected courses with an entrepreneurial approach in mind.

“I’m taking my electrician and business as well, because hopefully I can start my own electrician business down the road.”

VINCENT DYCK

Meanwhile, coach Carey said the addition of Vincent Dyck is a case of adding another player that fits the style of play the Kodiaks pride themselves on.

“Vincent just brings tenacity and a strong, hard work ethic. He’s a guy that won’t let you down no matter where you put him. He likes to see the ball and he wants to move it quick, and that’s what we’re going to be about. He is another one that fits the mould of what we want.”

Dyck said he’s ready for the challenge.

“I’m definitely looking forward to the intensity. I’m assuming we’re going to be competitive since [the Kodiaks] made nationals last year and I’m just really excited to hopefully continue that journey along with them.”

He credited the C2C program with helping him boost his skills on and off the pitch.

“The Cap’s to College program definitely helped with the soccer IQ side of everything. On-field and off-the-field as well, just all-around building you as a good player with good habits and good skills.”

Dyck said although he’s ready, he is feeling a little nervous for the season ahead.

“At the same time, I’m just excited to meet my new teammates and hopefully have a good environment together with them and click on all levels.”

He’s enrolled in Lethbridge College’s Business Administration program.
