LETHBRIDGE, AB – Residents looking to go for a pool dip and get some sunshine will be able to do both starting this Friday.

Henderson Pool reopens to the public on Friday, June 25.

General Manager for Recreation Excellence, Sunni Belle, said the facility will operate at a limited capacity of 350 people, per swim, as adjustments continue to be made to follow all COVID-19 health protocols.

One change going into this summer is that visitors will not have to pre-book their public swim spot, with each swim session operating on a first-come, first-serve basis. There will be four 90-minute public swim times daily between 12 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. All visitors will have to leave the pool at the end of the 90-minute time slot to allow staff to clean before the next session.

Belle recommends guests to come to the pool early, noting pre-admission will open roughly 60 minutes prior to the swim time, allowing visitors to pre-pay.

Admission prices remain unchanged from years past, at $4 for children three to 12-years-old and $4.50 for youth aged 13 to 17 as well as students aged 18 to 21 with a valid ID. Adults (18-59) will have to pay $6.50 with $5 for seniors (60-plus) and $16 for a family.

Belle noted that, “the change rooms will be closed, however, the washrooms and facilities will be open during your swim. The family change rooms on deck will also be open, for those who need to change little ones, or anyone who may need it.”

She said the hope is that restrictions will change for the pool after July 1st, when Alberta is set to enter Stage 3 of the Open for Summer Plan.

“We are waiting for the public health order to be released prior to releasing what that looks like. We are really good at pivoting and making quick changes.”

The schedule for Henderson Pool can be seen here.

Belle said once guests are in the facility, they do not have to wear a mask while outside.

“We do ask that you maintain your two-metres distance between your family cohorts and in the pool area. We have limited the capacity to allow that to keep the public safe during the Stage 2 restriction guidelines, so we think it will be fairly good. [There’s] lots of space for people to enjoy themselves without worry or concern.”

The ENMAX concession will remain closed for now, with Belle saying it should open later in the season. As for anyone looking to bring their own snacks to Henderson Pool, staff are limiting coolers this year. Belle explained that means, “no big coolers [are] allowed into the facility.”

“Because of the timed swims and the limited capacity, getting people in and out of the facility, it’s a lot of work to check coolers and to pack everything up and go.”

Guests can still bring treats with them; however, she asks that anyone wishing to do so brings their food in sealed containers in a small backpack, or a small backpack cooler.

“Small snacks are okay for your kids, just no large coolers full of food and lunches, and multiple water bottles.”

Belle added that the pool will have a “COVID monitor” during public swims.

“The COVID monitor will go around and make sure people are maintaining their distance in the facility.”

Additionally, the pool is offering new aquatic options this year, including Aqua Jog, Fit, Zumba, and swimming lessons. All water-based amenities at the site will be accessible to guests, including the water slides and the splash playground.

Recreation Excellence will continue to assess public demand while balancing public health measures as part of the phased approach to re-opening other pools in Lethbridge. At this time, both Nicholas Sheran Pool and Fritz Sick Pool remain closed. Updates from the City of Lethbridge are available here.
