Lethbridge property taxes due by Wednesday

Jun 28, 2021 | 9:24 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is reminding residents that property taxes are due this week.

Property owners are asked that if they can pay all or at least part of their taxes by Wednesday, June 30 to do so. This spring, City Council approved changes to 2021 property tax penalties by approving an additional 92-day deferral of tax levies and reducing penalties for 2021 tax accounts to help residents impacted by COVID-19.

Taxpayers have extra time to pay in full by September 30, but any outstanding property tax balances as of October 1 will have a three per cent penalty applied, which amounts to $30 for every $1,000 in outstanding property taxes. The penalty is four per cent on November 1 and five per cent on December 1. More details regarding this are available here.

The tax deadline and penalties are not applicable to property owners who pay monthly through the City of Lethbridge’s Tax Installment Prepayment Plan (TIPP). TIPP reduces tax with a 0.75 per cent annual discount credit.

Property owners whose 2021 taxes are paid in full can sign up for TIPP before July 20 to be enrolled in the program for their 2022 property taxes. More details are available here.

Taxes can be paid electronically through online banking using the 13-digit roll number found at the top right section of tax notices. Cheques or money orders (do not enclose cash) can also be dropped off using the drop box at the front door of Lethbridge City Hall or the drive-thru drop box in the circle behind City Hall.

Cash, cheques and debit card payments are accepted by cashiers on the main floor of City Hall from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The City does not accept credit card payments. Taxpayers are being encouraged to pay early, and not leave payments until the last minute.

Anyone who has recently purchased property and has not received a 2021 tax notice should call 311. Property owners can also sign up to receive their future property tax notices by email or view their 2021 property tax notice online through the City of Lethbridge website.
