Alberta sets new energy consumption record, 34 heat records Monday

Jun 29, 2021 | 10:59 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Anyone else ready to go back to complaining about how cold it is?

The province is currently in the midst of an extreme heatwave that is breaking all kinds of records.

Environment Canada says the “historic heatwave” resulted in daytime high records being broken in 34 different Albertan communities on Monday, June 28.

Most significantly, Grande Prairie, Jasper, and Hendrickson Creek set new heat records two days in a row.

Jasper was the hottest community at 39 degrees.

The Alberta Electric System Operator also reports that Monday resulted in an “unprecedented jump in energy use,” reaching 11,512 MW.

Dennis Frehlich, VP of Grid Reliability, says this breaks the previous summer peak demand record of 11,169 MW.

“We’re on track to break that record for a second day in a row and so we’re asking Albertans to play their part to conserve energy.”

Some things you can do to lessen your energy use, and therefore, your utility bills, includes closing windows during the day, lowering thermostats to pre-cool homes, and avoid using major appliances and charging electric devices during the period of highest demand.

The peak time of electricity use is between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
