More temperature records broken as historic heat wave continues

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Several communities in Alberta, including Lethbridge, broke more heat records on Tuesday.

A historic heat wave continues across the province. On June 29, Environment Canada reported a new record high of 36.4 degrees Celsius in Lethbridge, breaking the old record of 34.0 degrees set in 1984. Records in the Lethbridge area have been kept since 1902.

Other communities in southern Alberta that saw new heat records included:

  • Milk River Area: 34.7 degrees Celsius (previous record of 33.6 set in 2015)
  • Waterton Park Area: 33.4 degrees (30.7 set in 2008)
  • Taber Area: 36.3 degrees (33.7 set in 2008)
  • Pincher Creek Area: 33.6 degrees (32.2 set in 1896)
  • Claresholm Area: 35.7 degrees (33.5 set in 2008)
  • Cardston Area: 35.0 degrees (34.4 set in 1937)
  • Bow Island Area: 36.0 degrees (32.2 set in 2008)
  • Calgary Area: 36.3 degrees (34.4 set in 1896)

Last week, in preparation for the heat wave, the City of Lethbridge issued a number of tips on how residents can stay cool.
