Supporting Local: Mission Thrift Store – helping you save money while helping others

Jul 5, 2021 | 3:07 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Mission Shrift store helps the money conscious save on purchases while also saving the planet by giving donated items a renewed life. Items are kept out of the landfill, while profits from the items sold help fund charitable endeavors.

Assistant Manager Jacky Ketel, explains Mission Thrift store is a second hand store that accepts donations of various household goods, which are cleaned, priced and sold to help sustain the Bible League of Canada.

Jacky, says a lot of the donated goods are also used to help individuals and families in the community.

“We help people from Streets Alive and all kinds of organizations that are doing different things such as Operation Christmas Child, and lots of times, if people are working through other organizations, we can help them with needed kitchen goods, furniture and clothing that they may need.”

The store is the ultimate in recycling and up-cycling but, it was also hit by COVID. It was shut down from the middle of March in 2020 until the middle of this May, when they opened from noon to 5:00 at that point, so that volunteers could put product out in the mornings.

Jacky says that in spite of Covid, they’ve actually been able to help more people.

“Because of Covid, lots of people didn’t have the income that they normally would, so they looked at purchasing good second-hand rather than buying new, because they didn’t have the cash that they needed. Our sales have increased during COVID.”

Jacky believes a lot more people have ‘discovered’ Mission Thrift store since Covid began and they’re finding it to be very ‘trendy’.

“We’re finding vintage clothing and we’re getting these young girls who are 16-years old, coming in and trying on vintage clothing, and they’re loving it – it’s fun, it serves a useful purpose and lots of people are looking for the ‘retro’ furniture and clothing.”

If you have items you would like to donate, Jacky says you just have to go round to the north side of the building at 3001 32 Street South, Monday to Saturday, 11:00-am to 5:00-pm. Just ring the buzzer – they have super friendly guys back there who will help you unload your things.

The Mission Thrift Facebook page posts sales every Monday morning.
