Lethbridge-Medicine Hat’s jobless rate at 5.7% in June, lowest in Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge-Medicine Hat economic region has the lowest unemployment rate in all of Alberta.

The latest jobless statistics have been released, and the local area’s rate was 5.7 per cent for the month of June 2021. That’s a significant drop from 7.3 per cent in May.

Unfortunately, the province-wide rate went up to 9.3 per cent last month. That’s a jump from 8.7 per cent in May.

Below is a list of each economic region in the province’s unemployment rate for June, with May’s rate listed in parenthesis:

  • Red Deer: 10.2 per cent (10.2)
  • Edmonton: 9.7 per cent (10.3)
  • Calgary: 9.1 per cent (8.9)
  • Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House-Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River: 8.9 per cent (9.5)
  • Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake: 6.6 per cent (7.1)
  • Camrose-Drumheller: 6.5 per cent (6.9)
  • Lethbridge-Medicine Hat: 5.7 per cent (7.3)

Across the country, Statistics Canada says the national economy added 230,700 jobs in June. The boost came as restrictions put in place to slow the COVID-19 pandemic were eased across the nation.

Part-time positions rose 263,900, while the number of full-time jobs dropped 33,200.
