LETHBRIDGE, AB – There are now five people hoping to become the next mayor of Lethbridge.

Bradley Whalen was one of the first to announce his candidacy back in March, but over the last month or so, has decided to “switch gears” and shoot for a different seat on city council.

He is instead officially endorsing Blaine Hyggen in his run for mayor.

NOTE: After learning about the allegations and criminal convictions facing Whalen, Hyggen publicly stated that he does not accept Whalen’s endorsement.

“[Hyggen’s platform] is very similar to mine in regards to what he wants to do for small business, the downtown, the necessity of the third bridge to the west side. They were some of the key factors I wanted to deal with.”

“Blaine’s a genuine business maverick in the city, right, so he’s a small business owner like myself, he’s served two terms, he’s put a lot of time into the city, and I think he’s well-poised I think to become the mayor. I think he has a chance to win it without me having to take votes away from his potential voters because we’re both looking for the same things in the city.”

Whalen says he and Hyggen do have their disagreements, but they agree on 85 per cent of the issues.

While dropping out of the mayoral race, Whalen will now seek to become a city councillor.

He believes that, assuming he and Hyggen get elected to their respective seats, it will help to foster a more collaborative environment in council chambers.

“I think that the whole council and the mayor should work together as a team anyways. The years of fighting in chambers has to stop and people need to realize who put you there and why you’re there and start working towards the betterment of all the residents and their wishes.”
