Fire ban issued in Waterton as danger rating reaches “extreme”

WATERTON, AB – The fire danger rating in Waterton Lakes National Park is “extreme.”

As such, Parks Canada has issued a fire ban throughout the entirety of Alberta’s southernmost national park.

This fire ban includes ALL open fires, EXCEPT, provided they are under direct supervision and certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSAGroup) or Underwriters Laboratories (UL):”

  • Portable propane fire pits
  • Gas or propane stoves and barbeques designed for cooking or heating
  • Propane or gas fuelled lanterns (enclosed flame)
  • Patio heaters (propane, catalytic or infrared/radiant)

Failure to comply with the fire ban can result in a maximum fine under the Canada National Parks Act of $25,000.

It remains in effect until further notice.
