New COVID cases surging in Alberta but severe outcomes stay low

Aug 3, 2021 | 3:52 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released Tuesday’s report on COVID-19.

For the time being, LNN is only reporting COVID numbers once per week, so today’s article will cover statistics compiled over that time.

Over the last eight days, AHS reported an average of 186 new cases per day, bringing the total to 235,038. Of those, 2,176 cases are active while 230,534 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, a total of 208 people tested positive for a daily average of 26 infections per day.

Active cases in Lethbridge more than doubled to 38 and regionally, going up from 85 to 210 in the last eight days.

Despite new cases increasing significantly, severe outcomes have not trended in the same direction.

During that time, six Albertans died from COVID with two each in the Edmonton and North Zones and one each in the Calgary and Central Zones. To date, 2,328 Albertans have lost their lives as a result of the pandemic.

Provincially, 90 patients are currently hospitalized including 23 who have been admitted to intensive care. This is a very slight increase from our story last week.

76 per cent of Albertans aged 12 and up have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine while 65.8 per cent are fully immunized. 5,331,823 shots have been administered in total in Alberta.

Below is a graph of how COVID-19 cases in Alberta have trended since the start of the pandemic, which can also be accessed with more detail here.
