WAITING FOR EFFECTIVE DATE

Albertans ready for single event sports betting, says AGLC

Officials with Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC) are eagerly awaiting the effective date of Bill C-218, the recently passed federal legislation which would allow players to wager on the outcome of one event, should they choose.

“AGLC has long supported modernizing federal gambling laws and is looking forward to the day that legal aged Albertans can have the opportunity to place new and unique wagers on their favourite sporting events,” says Kandice Machado, Acting President & CEO, AGLC, in a press release.

“Currently, Albertans are unable to bet on the outcome of a single event, such as this week’s CFL kickoff or the final week of the Olympic Games.”

Machado says AGLC is continuing to work with industry stakeholders to offer sports wagering in destination facilities throughout Alberta.

“AGLC and Play Alberta are also excited to add sports betting, including single event options, to the website later in 2021, which will further enhance the players’ experience while presenting exciting and relevant gambling entertainment options on Alberta’s only, regulated online gambling website,” she points out.

“The best in class, GameSense responsible gambling program will be an integral part of sports betting in Alberta,” adds Machado. “Play Alberta has integrated GameSense online, which gives players access to tools and resources that support healthy gambling choices. The website offers features such as loss, bet and daily session limits, while AGLC’s Self-Exclusion Program is available for anyone that may need additional help.”

The Play Alberta Support Centre is available through chat, phone or email, should players or those with questions about the website, need further information.
