Eastbound lanes of Whoop-Up Drive to see closures starting this week

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Crews will be working hard on Whoop-Up Drive this week and into next.

Starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday, August 12, two eastbound lanes of Whoop-Up Drive will be closed.

Crews will be working on asphalt milling in advance of a paving project. One eastbound lane will stay open while this portion of the work is completed.

On Saturday, August 14, beginning at 5 a.m., all eastbound lanes of Whoop-Up Drive will be closed, as paving will be done past the bridge deck towards the Scenic Drive overpass.

This work is anticipated to be done by end of day on Thursday, August 19, weather permitting.

Two-way traffic will be maintained via the westbound lanes. The speed limit will be dropped to 50 km/h. The City of Lethbridge suggests residents use Highway 3 as an alternate route.

Eastbound traffic will be directed to the other side of the road via the media gate at the top of the west side. Motorists are asked to take turns merging and to be courteous to allow other vehicles in.

Message boards will be placed at key areas as well. The city noted that while the closure is in place, crews may add additional work for bridge deck patching, as well as further guardrail maintenance. Crack sealing and bridge washing has already taken place.

The city said that “by fully closing the eastbound lanes, rather than having a rotational lane closure, the work can be finished sooner.” Motorists are asked to drive with caution and follow posted detours.

The project is being funded through the existing Capital Budget, as part of the annual overlay program.
