Funding announced to upgrade mental health facilities at Chinook Regional Hospital

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Those needing mental health supports in Lethbridge will soon have more resources to access.

The Alberta Government is highlighting funding that was announced last summer as the federal and provincial governments are dedicating more than $38.5-million in funding for two dozen infrastructure projects across Alberta.

A press release from the province on Tuesday made it appear as though this was new money, but officials have clarified the announcement to LNN.

“This was not new money, but allowed already-allocated funds to be used on shorter-term projects. It also allowed for a favourable cost-sharing arrangement (75% federal, 25% provincial). Oftentimes the provincial government must contribute 50% of the project cost, other times it’s a 1/3 1/3 1/3 split with the extra 1/3 coming from the project proponent (often a municipality),” reads an updated statement to LNN.

Alberta’s Infrastructure Minister Prasad Panda says these include retrofits, repairs, and upgrades to provincially-owned facilities, improvements to emergency response and prevention infrastructure, as well as trails, sidewalks, and outdoor spaces.

“Taxpayers are spending on priority infrastructure projects that will help relaunch Alberta’s economy. These projects will get Albertans working in the short term, while ensuring the province has the vital infrastructure necessary for years to come.”

Only one initiative was announced for Lethbridge – upgrades to the mental health facilities at Chinook Regional Hospital.

A media release from the federal government states that facilities in Lethbridge, Calgary, and Edmonton will share over $3.8-million of combined funding. It was not stated how much Chinook Regional Hospital will get of that or what specifically will be upgraded.

Jim Carr, federal Minister and Special Representative for the Prairies, says the money being announced will help millions of Albertans stay safe and active for years to come.

“As we look to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and strive to build a brighter, more resilient future, it is essential to invest in local, public infrastructure, including active transportation and outdoor spaces, to stimulate the economy and improve the quality of life for Canadians.”
