Alberta sees 501 new COVID cases in one day

Aug 11, 2021 | 4:26 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise across the province.

For the last few months, LNN has only been doing COVID updates once per week, but we have reached our threshold of 500 new daily cases to start doing them every day again.

Over the last 24 hours, 501 new positive tests were identified in Alberta, bringing the total to 237,807. Of those, 3,769 cases are active while 231,707 people have recovered.

Provincially, active infections are more than six times what they were on July 12.

Since our last update was two days ago on Monday, August 9, most of the other stats in this article will include numbers from the past two days combined or will be a comparison from the month prior.

In the South Zone, 149 cases were confirmed with 100 in Medicine Hat, 24 in Lethbridge, and 11 in Cypress County.

On July 12, there were 22 active cases in the South Zone and five in Lethbridge, now increasing to 527 and 84 respectively.

Over the last two days, four Albertans died from COVID with two each in the Calgary and Edmonton Zones. To date, 2,331 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 138 patients are currently hospitalized including 31 who have been admitted to intensive care. From one month ago, there is now an increase of 26 people in hospital and seven in ICU.

76.5 per cent of Albertans aged 12 and up are at least partially vaccinated against COVID-19 and 67.2 per cent are fully immunized.

NOTE: Starting this coming Monday, August 16, the Alberta Government will be lifting COVID-19 testing requirements for those with symptoms and their close contacts, and self-isolation will be “strongly recommended.” This will likely result in a dramatic drop in the number of cases being reported, but will not necessarily be indicative of how many people are getting sick.
