Additional victims come forward in Lethbridge human trafficking investigation

Aug 19, 2021 | 3:08 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — It was anticipated there could be more victims in the recently announced LPS human trafficking investigation and, indeed, they are coming forward.

Earlier this month, police arrested 10 men, ranging in age from 16 to 37, on multiple charges including sexual interference, sexual assault causing bodily harm and trafficking persons under 18.

Investigators learned that a 15-year-old female had been selected, groomed and brought to specific locations where the offences took place. They subsequently determined the same individuals had also engaged in sexual activity with a 13-year-old victim.

As of Thursday (Aug 19), three additional victims have come forward and as the investigation expands, additional charges may result against those previously arrested.

A statement from LPS reads: “Lethbridge Police applaud the courage shown by the victims who have already come forward and encourage anyone who may have been a victim of human trafficking to do the same. The impact of the investigation has also led to victims reporting to LPS sexual assaults unrelated to this file or the individuals charged.”

Anyone with information in relation to this investigation is asked to contact Acting Sgt. Bryan Whelpley, at 403-330-5167. Tips can also be provided anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
