Devon Hargreaves running for federal Liberals in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – “There’s very much a hunger for change in our community and people are ready to look at different options. Historically, Lethbridge and Alberta has voted Conservative, and I think there’s no one who’s going to be more accountable to the people in our riding than an elected Liberal.”

Devon Hargreaves was confirmed as the Liberal Party of Canada candidate for the Lethbridge riding back in June, but with the federal election now set for September, he is ramping up his campaign.

He says he wanted to run for Justin Trudeau’s party because he believes the city needs a strong, progressive voice at the table.

During his door-knocking campaign, he told LNN that those sentiments have been echoed by many in the community.

“We’re overwhelmingly hearing that Lethbridge is ready for change, a lot of people are happy with the work our Liberal government did to keep people provided for and secure during the last 17 months and we’re looking for a mandate to continue to look out for every Albertan and every Canadian.”

Affordable housing and getting Ottawa’s $10/day childcare program into Alberta are among his top priorities.

As an un-elected citizen, Hargreaves has been able to get legislation introduced into the Senate, including a motion to ban conversion therapy. That work also led to the City of Lethbridge banning the practice last year.

He was formerly on the board of the Lethbridge Pride Fest Society for five years, serving as the chair for the last two, and was also on the Lethbridge College Students’ Association.

Hargreaves was on the ballot in the 2019 provincial election as a member of the Alberta Liberal Party.

General voting day for the 2021 federal election is Monday, September 20.

At the time of publication, four candidates have been confirmed to be running in the Lethbridge riding for the federal election.

Rachael Harder – Conservative (Incumbent)

Kimmie Hovan – People’s Party

Kim Siever – Independent (has declined an interview request with LNN)
