New COVID cases in Alberta surpass 1,000 for the first time in several months

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Alberta Health Services has released its report on COVID-19 for Wednesday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,076 cases were confirmed in Alberta, bringing the total to date to 246,674. Of those, 8,496 are active while 235,822 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 118 people tested positive with 62 in Medicine Hat and 12 in Lethbridge.

Active infections across the region have now entered four digits, rising by 46 over the past day to 1,035.

Since yesterday’s update, one person from the North Zone died from COVID, meaning a total of 2,356 Albertans have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 284 patients are currently hospitalized including 59 who have been admitted to intensive care.

77.5 per cent of Albertans aged 12 and up have received at least one COVID vaccine dose while 69 per cent are fully immunized.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 99,964 cases, 2,572 active
    • 90 in hospital, 14 in ICU
    • 714 deaths
  • Edmonton Zone – 81,668 cases, 2,667 active
    • 102 in hospital, 25 in ICU
    • 1,114 deaths
  • North Zone – 28,608 cases, 1,328 active
    • 28 in hospital, three in ICU
    • 208 deaths (one new)
  • Cental Zone – 22,153 cases, 874 active
    • 26 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 176 deaths
  • South Zone – 14,251 cases, 1,035 active
    • 38 in hospital, 12 in ICU
    • 144 deaths

Below is a breakdown of new cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 5,099 cases (12 new), 149 active, 40 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,898 cases (five new), 78 active, four deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,675 cases (three new), 32 active, 11 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,525 cases (four new), 39 active, 25 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 2,200 cases (62 new), 533 active, 27 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,591 cases (eight new), 50 active, 15 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,314 cases (two new), 36 active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,101 cases (six new), 59 active, 20 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 611 cases (four new), 33 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 480 cases, eight active, three deaths
  • Cypress County – 448 cases (nine new), 82 active, one death
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 380 cases (five new), 30 active, five deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 328 cases (two new), five active, six deaths
  • County of Newell – 276 cases (five new), 19 active, three deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 172 cases (three new), 13 active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 94 cases, six active, one death
  • Waterton – Six cases, zero active, zero deaths
