Active COVID cases surpass 11K in Alberta as 1,018/day confirmed this weekend

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Alberta Health Services has released its report on COVID-19 for Monday, covering statistics compiled over the past three days.

1,231 cases were confirmed on Friday, 960 on Saturday, and 865 on Sunday, for a daily average of 1,018. That brings the total to date to 252,010.

Of those, 11,426 cases are active while 238,213 people have recovered.

This is the first time since May 26 that the number of active cases in Alberta was in the five digits. In LNN’s most recent COVID update, post on Friday afternoon, there were 9,655 active cases.

In that time, 390 people in the South Zone tested positive, or an average of 130 per day. That includes 116 in Medicine Hat, 47 in Lethbridge, and 30 in Cardston County.

Active infections across the region increased by 124 and in Lethbridge by 24.

Seven Albertans died from COVID over the weekend with three in the Edmonton Zone, two in the North Zone, and one each in the South and Central Zones. In total, 2,371 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 401 patients are currently hospitalized including 98 who have been admitted to intensive care.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 101,378 cases, 3,193 active
    • 117 in hospital, 29 in ICU
    • 715 deaths
  • Edmonton Zone – 83,316 cases, 3,571 active
    • 134 in hospital, 38 in ICU
    • 1,117 deaths (three new)
  • North Zone – 29,727 cases, 2,111 active
    • 53 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 212 deaths (two new)
  • Cental Zone – 22,782 cases, 1,304 active
    • 43 in hospital, 12 in ICU
    • 181 deaths (one new)
  • South Zone – 14,746 cases, 1,198 active
    • 54 in hospital, 13 in ICU
    • 146 deaths (one new)

Below is a breakdown of new cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 5,176 cases (47 new), 184 active, 40 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,933 cases (20 new), 91 active, four deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,694 cases (12 new), 41 active, 11 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,548 cases (15 new), 52 active, 25 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 2,291 cases (116 new), 544 active, 28 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,619 cases (12 new), 70 active, 15 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,340 cases (17 new), 44 active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,135 cases (30 new), 100 active, 20 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 637 cases (15 new), 47 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 488 cases (seven new), 13 active, three deaths
  • Cypress County – 490 cases (25 new), 89 active, one death
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 393 cases (seven new), 35 active, five deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 339 cases (eight new), 16 active, six deaths
  • County of Newell – 284 cases (five new), 25 active, three deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 173 cases, 13 active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 96 cases (one new), five active, one death
